South Portland educators
receive Yale award

SOUTH PORTLAND — South Portland High School educators, guidance counselor Linda Sturm and math teacher Andrew Lupien, were awarded the 2009 Yale University Educator Awards.

Jacob Viola, a 2009 graduate of South Portland High School and current Yale freshman, nominated the pair for the award.

The award included a congratulatory letter and engraved desk set in recognition of outstanding educators who have inspired their students to achieve at high levels.

Zema receives
journalism scholarship

ELLSWORTH — The Guy P. Gannett Journalism Scholarship Fund of the Maine Community Foundation has awarded $145,000 in scholarships to 16 graduates of Maine high schools.

Kegan Zema of South Portland was one of 12 students to have her Gannett scholarship renewed to pursue journalism studies.

Cape middle school
earns fitness award

CAPE ELIZABETH — Cape Elizabeth Middle School was recently named State Champion by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

The middle school will receive an award certificate for being named State Champion, and students who scored at or above the 85th percentile in the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test will receive an embroidered State Champion emblem and a certificate.
