earns two gold medals

SOUTH PORTLAND — The South Portland Red Riot Marching Band has finished the season with two gold medals for its 2009 program, “The Planets,” under the direction of Craig Skeffington.

At the Maine Band Directors Association finals held Oct. 31, the Red Riots took home the gold for the fourth consecutive year.

The following day the marching band competed in the New England Scholastic Band Association finals held in Bridgewater, Mass., and earned the Gold Medal distinction. The percussion section also took first place in its division.

“Oliver!” the musical, based on Charles Dickens’ classic novel, “Oliver Twist,” opens at Cape Elizabeth High School at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13. The show is directed by Richard Mullen and features 60 performers, including current and former Cape Elizabeth High School students, faculty members and a 10-student band. Evening showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Fridays, Nov. 13 and Nov. 20; Saturday, Nov. 21; Tuesday, Nov. 24; and Wednesday, Nov. 25. Sunday matinee shows will be held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 15 and Nov. 22.
