BRUNSWICK — Richard L. Barton, 81, died Nov. 14 at his winter home in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, where he and his wife had spent their winters since 1984.

On July 12, 1928, he was born in Westbrook, a son of George Harold and Ione Ladd Barton and graduated from Westbrook High School in 1946.

After high school, he attended the University of Maine in Orono, where he was a member of the ROTC program. He later graduated from the University of Maine and Boston University School of Law.

On May 26, 1950, he married Barbara Ann Skolfield in Portsmouth, N.H.

He served in the Army during the Korean War.

For more than 50 years he practiced law in Brunswick and was a partner in the law firm of Wilson, Steinfeld, Merrill, Barton and Lane of Portland. He was also the attorney for the town of Harpswell for many years.

He was a member of Saccarappa Lodge 86 of Westbrook, Kora Temple Shrine, Hawthorne Chapter, OES, and Brunswick Lodge of Elks. Additionally he served on the Brunswick Planning Board and was a corporator of the former Brunswick Savings Institution.

His interests included local and world history.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Ann of Brunswick; two daughters, Dr. Linda-Lee Barton and Nancy-Ann Barton; two grandchildren, Kimberlee Ann Skolfield Dietlin and John Allen Dietlin, all of Harpswell; a brother, Enoch Barton and his wife Mary of Westbrook; and several nieces and nephews.
