PITTSBURGH – Ashton Gibbs scored 21 points and No. 19 Pittsburgh upset No. 3 Villanova 70-65 in a Big East men’s basketball game Sunday.
Gilbert Brown added 16 points, including a dunk off a baseline move with 1:29 left that gave the Panthers (21-6, 10-4 Big East) a six-point lead.
Scottie Reynolds finished with 20 points for the Wildcats, and his three foul shots with 7 seconds left got Villanova (22-4, 11-3) within three, but Pitt withstood Villanova’s late pressure.
(6) DUKE 67, VIRGINIA TECH 55: Kyle Singler had 25 points and 10 rebounds as Duke (23-4, 11-2 ACC) pulled away late to beat visiting Virginia Tech (21-5, 8-4).
(9) OHIO STATE 74, (11) MICHIGAN STATE 67: Evan Turner scored 20 points to lead Ohio State (21-7, 11-4 Big Ten) to a victory over Michigan State (21-7, 11-4) at East Lansing, Mich.
(14) WISCONSIN 70, NORTHWESTERN 63: Jon Leuer’s blocked shot with 11 seconds remaining helped Wisconsin (20-7, 10-5 Big Ten) escape with a victory over Northwestern (17-10, 6-9) at Madison, Wis.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
MICHIGAN STATE 71, (7) OHIO STATE 68: Brittney Thomas scored 19 points, including a basket to trigger an 8-0 run and two clinching free throws in overtime, to lead Michigan State (19-8, 10-6 Big Ten) to a victory over Ohio State (26-4, 14-3) at Columbus, Ohio.
(8) DUKE 71, MARYLAND 59: Karima Christmas scored 25 points to help Duke (23-4, 11-1 ACC) defeat Maryland (18-9, 5-7) at Durham, N.C.
(11) OKLAHOMA 64, KANSAS STATE 58: Nyeshia Stevenson had 24 points and Oklahoma (19-7, 9-3 Big 12) overcame a 21-point deficit to defeat Kansas State (12-14, 4-8) at Manhattan, Kan.
(16) KENTUCKY 71, SOUTH CAROLINA 50: Victoria Dunlap scored 16 points and Kentucky (23-4, 11-3 SEC) beat South Carolina (13-13, 6-7) to finish the regular season unbeaten at home.
(19) GEORGIA TECH 77, MIAMI 73: Brigitte Ardossi scored 27 points, including two free throws with 25 seconds left, and Georgia Tech (21-7, 7-5 ACC) beat Miami (16-11, 3-9) at Coral Gables, Fla.
FLORIDA 64, (20) GEORGIA 57: Steffi Sorensen tied a career high with 20 points as Florida (14-13, 7-7 SEC) upset visiting Georgia (20-7, 7-7).
SOFTBALL
TEXAS TECH 12, MAINE 9: The Red Raiders (9-1) broke a 9-9 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth as they edged the Black Bears (1-9) at the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas.
Alexis Souhlaris led off the game with a home run for the Black Bears, and Terren Hall and Cassie Hodgdon each added three-run homers during a seven-run second inning.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
BOSTON UNIVERSITY 2, MAINE 0: Lauren Cherewyk scored the first goal midway through the second period to help the Terriers (14-8-12, 10-6-5-3 Hockey East) defeat the Black Bears (6-20-5, 3-15-3-1) at Orono.
Candice Currier finished with 29 saves for the Black Bears.
WRESTLING
USM: Mike Morin (165 pounds) and Matt Ulrich (141) qualified for the NCAA Division III championships by winning their weight classes at the New England Wrestling Association Championship in Springfield, Mass.
