PORTLAND – St. Ansgar Evangelical Lutheran Church recently voted unanimously to become a Reconciling in Christ congregation.
The vote was taken at the congregation’s annual meeting on Feb. 7. With the vote, St. Ansgar became the first congregation in Maine with RIC status.
Lutheran churches in the Reconciling in Christ program incorporate into church documents a statement of affirmation and welcome of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. The New England Synod is an RIC synod.
St. Ansgar, located at 515 Woodford St., was founded in 1954 in a merger between Immanuel (Swedish) Lutheran Church and St. Ansgar (Danish) Evangelical Lutheran Church. The church’s heritage remains important, but the parish also recognizes the diversity and needs of the city’s evolving population.
