AUGUSTA — A University of Maine runner who’s joined the exclusive club of sub-4 minute milers is being honored by the Legislature.
Riley Masters of Bangor accomplished the feat Feb. 13 when he cracked the milestone with a time of 3 minutes, 59.97 seconds, provisionally qualifying him for the NCAA championships and breaking the school record. Masters, a UMaine sophomore, is a member of the Black Bear track and cross-country teams.
Masters was in the State House on Thursday when the House of representatives formally recognized his feat. The Senate’s expected to do the same after it returns on Tuesday.
The sub-4 minute mile was first accomplished in 1954 by English runner Roger Bannister.
