PORTLAND — Three senators want the Transportation Security Administration to look to Amsterdam as an example of how to deploy body-scanning technology while addressing privacy concerns.
In a letter to Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano, Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Jon Kyl of Arizona and Saxby Chambliss of Georgia say so-called auto detection could eliminate privacy concerns associated with full body scans while reducing scan times and the space needed for equipment.
The scanners observed by the senators on a recent visit to Amsterdam indicate security concerns on a featureless human body instead of detailed images of passengers.
Already, more than 40 scanners are deployed in U.S. airports, and nearly 1,000 will be in use by the end of next year.
