SKOWHEGAN — Closing arguments have been completed in the trial of a 22-year-old Augusta man on charges related to a machete attack that maimed two members of a Pittston family.

Daniel Fortune is charged with aggravated attempted murder in the May 2008 home-invasion attack on William Guerrette Jr.; and his daughter, Nicole, who was 10 at the time. Twenty-year-old Leo Hylton, Fortune’s former roommate, has already pleaded guilty in the case and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

In closing arguments today, Fortune’s lawyer Pam Ames told jurors that Fortune didn’t know that a violent attack was planned when he rode with Hylton to the Guerrette home the night of the attacks.

Prosecutors say the two men acted together.
