Construction work on the Veterans Memorial Bridge replacement project will begin on Monday. The bridge connects Portland and South Portland off Interstate 295,

The bridge’s southbound sidewalk and shoulder will be closed to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians beginning June 28.

There will also be daily southbound lane closures as necessary during off-peak traffic hours for construction activities. Traffic during the week from 4:30 to 6 p.m. will not be affected.

The new bridge is scheduled to open to traffic in the summer of 2012, when the old Veterans Memorial Bridge will be removed. The project should be completed by December 2012.
