An Alfred man who authorities say lost a finger when a homemade bomb exploded pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court today to charges of possession of a destructive device, being a felon with a gun and cultivating marijuana.

Robert Infante was arrested last month after the State Police bomb squad and members of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives either seized or destroyed several pipe bombs at Infante’s house and in his car after he drove himself to Southern Maine Medical Center.

Infante’s criminal record includes previous federal charges of possessing a destructive device in connection with having pipe bombs.

Infante entered his not guilty plea in federal court today at his arraignment before Magistrate Judge John H. Rich III.

Infante reported a propane explosion June 25 at his house in Alfred but when firefighters arrived they found partially assembled pipe bombs in the basement and a marijuana growing operation, authorities said.
