ELLSWORTH — A new excursion train is set to begin carrying passengers in eastern Maine’s Hancock County.

The Downeast Scenic Railroad made its inaugural run on Saturday from Ellsworth for some of the 75 volunteers who put in 37,000 hours of labor over four years to clear abandoned tracks, repair the rail bed and restore old cars.

The train is made up of four restored cars.

The Bangor Daily News says the railroad plans to extend its run from Ellsworth to Green Lake and Dedham and add at least two more passenger cars that are still being refurbished.

The train will open to the public this weekend and offer Saturday and Sunday trips into the fall
