York police plan a concentrated end-of-summer enforcement effort to catch anyone in town that is driving impaired.

The department is joining with other agencies for a Labor Day crackdown known as: Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.

“All too often, innocent, law-abiding people suffer tragic consequences and the loss of loved ones due to this careless disregard for human life,” said Chief Douglas P. Bracy. Police vowed they would arrest every driver whose blood alcohol content was over the legal limit.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a coordinated public education campaign and made money available so departments can pay officers overtime to conduct the extra drunk driving patrols.

Westbrook police conducted an enforcement detail on July 2 and took six impaired drivers off the road, said Capt. Tom Roth.

“It’s important to get them off the road to ensure the safety of others and themselves as well,” Roth said.
