NEW ON DVD AND BLU-RAY

“DIARY OF A WIMPY KID,” starring Zachary Gordon and Steve Zahn. The wildly successful young adult books by Jeff Kinney largely survive the transition from page to screen, with the likable Gordon (“Georgia Rule”) proving a worthy live-action embodiment of our hero Greg Heffley, an everytween just trying to get through his day at his typically chaotic middle school. Special features include “deleted diary pages” and a commentary from director Thor Freudenthal. Rated PG for rude humor and language. Running time: 1:34.

Suggested retail price: DVD $29.98; Blu-ray $39.99

“THE GHOST WRITER,” starring Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan. The typically twisty and twisted political thriller from Roman Polanski finds ghost writer McGregor signing on to write the memoirs of a former British prime minister (Brosnan), a seemingly sweet gig that turns out to be far more than he bargained for upon discovering that the writer he replaced died by apparent suicide. Special features include an interview with Polanski. Rated PG-13 for language, brief nudity/sexuality, some violence and a drug reference. Running time: 2:28

Suggested retail price: DVD $26.99; Blu-ray $40.99

“KICK-ASS,” starring Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz. Based on the popular comic book by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., “Kick-Ass” is the wildly entertaining and gleefully profane tale of Dave (Johnson), an unassuming young man who decides to take to the street to fight crime under the titular superhero name — despite having no superpowers or even a great deal of physical prowess. Special features include a commentary from Vaughn and a four-part making-of featurette. Rated R for strong brutal violence, pervasive language, sexual content, nudity and drug use — some involving children. Running time: 1:57

“AFTER.LIFE,” starring Liam Neeson and Justin Long. Inconsistent but suitably creepy thriller finds funeral director Neeson able to communicate with the recently dead, whom we learn aren’t really completely deceased until they’re 6 feet under. Rated R for nudity, disturbing images, language and brief sexuality. Running time: 1:44

Suggested retail price: DVD $29.99; Blu-ray $34.98

“HEROES: SEASON FOUR,” starring Kristen Bell and Ali Larter. Widely considered a return to form after two less-than-satisfying seasons, season four of “Heroes” wisely slows down a bit, reigning in the rampant subplots and left-field plot twists that fans felt marred seasons two and three. Special features include deleted and extended scenes. Not rated, contains language and fantasy violence. Running time: 13:30

Suggested retail price: DVD $59.98; Blu-ray $79.98
