Portland High’s fall sports practices begin today as follows: football, 8-11 a.m. at Quinn Field and 4-7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Stadium; field hockey, 8-11 a.m. at Deering Oaks and 2-4 p.m. at Fitzpatrick; boys’ soccer, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Fitzpatrick; girls’ soccer, 8-10 a.m. at Fitzpatrick and 4:30-6 p.m. at Preble Street Field; cheering, 9:30 a.m. to noon at Fitzpatrick; girls’ cross country, 9 a.m. at Fitzpatrick; boys’ cross country, 8:30 a.m. at Fitzpatrick; golf, 9 a.m. at the lower cafeteria. The deadline for returning sailors to register is Thursday.

The Lewiston Maineiacs will hold the first meeting of their media/community relations and game operations committee at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The committee is seeking help for the following positions: anthem singer, on-ice promotions, crowd microphone host, community/public relations, website and communications. The meeting is open to college interns or others who are interested in the positions, as well as those who are interested in making other contributions to community relations and game operations. Maine Hits has partnered with the Fall Showcase League to add two teams of Maine high school players. College coaches from throughout New England will be attending league games. League participants will play seven games, hosted by area colleges, between Sept. 4 and Oct. 16. Practices will be held in the evenings. The cost of the program is $350. South Portland High’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams are holding an alumni race as part of the Paul Brogan Relay Invitational on Friday. South Portland alumni and alumni opponents are invited to run the 2.65-mile course. Registration is open for the Shawnee Peak Challenge, which will be held Oct. 23. The event features 15 intense obstacles and includes running, climbing, jumping, crawling, and core and balancing elements. Military-style trainers will be positioned along the course to encourage and push athletes. There will be four divisions: men’s, women’s, men’s masters and women’s masters. The LPGA Legends Tour will hold the Handa Cup, an international match play competition between U.S. and internationally born tour members, at Wentworth by the Sea Country Club in Rye, N.H., from Sept. 2-5. The Saco Bay Rotary Tri-City Golf Classic will be held Sept. 10-12 at Deep Brook Golf Course, Dunegrass Golf Club and Dutch Elm Golf Course. The 54-hole, stroke-play event is open to amateur golfers with an established USGA handicap. It offers three classes for men, two for women, a senior division (55 and older) and a junior division (under 18). The cost is $80 for members of one the three host courses or Biddeford and Saco Country Club, and $100 for others. The cost for juniors is $60 for members and $80 for others.
