FALMOUTH — Ron Philo of Stowe, Vt., shot a 5-under-par 65 Tuesday to lead the field after the opening round of the New England PGA Championship at The Woodlands Club and Portland Country Club.
Philo, who opened at the par-70 Portland CC, led Frank Dully of Salem, Mass., by two strokes and Jeffrey Martin of Warwick, R.I., by three. Dully and Martin also played at Portland.
Benjamin Morey of Windham (Spring Meadows Golf & Country Club) and John Hickson of Topsham (Dick’s Sporting Goods) were each 1 over par to lead Maine golfers.
Chris Angis of Saco (Biddeford-Saco Country Club), Darren Falk of South Portland (Prouts Neck Country Club) and Jeff Seavey of Homosassa, Fla. (Samoset Resort) were each 2 over.
Golfers will switch courses for today’s second round before the final round Thursday at The Woodlands.
