KENNEBUNK

UNITED WAY of York County, Habitat for Humanity and The New School have set Oct. 27 as the deadline for receiving requests from low-income or disabled homeowners who wish to be considered for weatherization services. Training and installation will be Oct. 23 to Nov. 21. The number of homes weatherized will depend on the number of volunteers and weatherization material available through sponsorships. AN ANTIQUES SHOW and sale at Kennebunk High School raised more than $5,000 for the Animal Welfare Society of West Kennebunk. Local businesses and community members donated the antiques. For more information, go to www.animalwelfaresociety.org.

PORTLAND/SOUTH PORTLAND

AS PART of a cancer awareness project, the Portland and South Portland fire departments will be wearing pink T-shirts through Saturday. Both departments want to raise awareness and emphasize the importance of early canceer detection.

SOUTH PORTLAND

TRAVEL and hospitality students at Kaplan University are collecting school supplies for The Success School in Hopewell, Jamaica, through October. Collection boxes are located in the main lobby of the South Portland campus at 265 Western Ave. Supplies needed include books, educational puzzles and games for children in grades 1 to 6. In September, students raised nearly $250 from a Jamaican Jerk Chicken Barbecue.

 

STUDENTS in Tania Ferrante’s Learning Alternatives Ecology class at South Portland High School worked with Cultivating Communities to build five raised vegetable beds and two compost bins. Fresh organic tomatoes, green beans, broccoli, leeks, lettuce and herbs were grown in the school’s greenhouse then transplanted to the raised beds. The harvest from these beds was brought to both the school’s cafeteria and the Ronald McDonald House in Portland.

PORTLAND

STUDENTS at Longfellow Elementary School harvested carrots grown by students in the schoolyard for the school’s recent Maine Harvest Lunch celebration. During the weeklong celebration, elementary and middle schools throughout Portland Public Schools featured local foods in their cafeterias. During the 2009-2010 school year, nearly 22 percent of the district’s total food budget was spent on local produce.

WINDHAM

ZACHARY KNIGHTS, a 2010 graduate of Windham High School, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in Boy Scouts of America. Zac began scouting with Cub Scout Pack 800 in Raymond and earned rank of Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting. He continued his experience, holding many leadership positions. His leadership project was the restoration of the patio at Raymond Village Community Church.

BIDDEFORD

THE COALITION for Improving Maternity Services has honored Lisa O’Rourke Goulet of Biddeford as a Mother-Friendly Nurse who provides maternity care consistent with the Principles and Ten Steps of the Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative. Goulet is a member of the Seacoast Doula Group.

BONNY EAGLE High School senior Pauline Adams has been named a Commended Student in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program.

SANFORD

THE ALZHEIMER’S Memory Walk on Sept. 25 raised $24,353.52 to benefit the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. Top pledge raisers for the effort included Sheila Douglass of Lebanon with $1,535; The Guerin/Normand Family Team, with $2,780; and the Pavilion Pacers, in the business category, with $3,036.34.
