THE ANNUAL Thanksgiving Volvo Giveaway is seeking nominations of a family in need. Atlantic Motorcar will give a Volvo to a Maine family that needs help during these hard economic times.

PORTLAND

RIVERTON Elementary School is offering a new after-school program to explore various topics and offer homework help. The program is being offered through a partnership with LearningWorks as part of Riverton’s $3.4 million school improvement grant.

The free program enrolled 150 students in its first month and will expand to accommodate all interested students. Children attend on school days from 3 to 5 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and are offered hands-on learning activities to complement regular school work. The program will run through early June.

THE BACK PARKING LOT of the Center for Grieving Children is getting a makeover. The new playspace includes a Kids Crooked House designed specifically for the center, along with new landscaping.

The center provides loving support to grieving children, teens, families and community.

FALMOUTH

A SCHOLARSHIP has been established at Falmouth High School in memory of Dr. Ferris Ray. Dr. Ray, a vascular surgeon at Maine Medical Center for 40 years, died Aug. 28.

The scholarship will assist a graduating student who plans to enter a premedical course of study. To contribute, donations may be sent to Falmouth High School, Attn: Registrar, 74 Woodville Road, Falmouth, ME 04105.

NEW GLOUCESTER

THE ANNUAL New Gloucester Historical Society Pie Sale was a huge success, with 150 pies made and sold. The society wants to thank all the volunteers and Thompson’s Orchard for donating the apples, as well as those who bought pies.

 

THE GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER Middle School football team paid a visit to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital after a practice earlier this month to present a check for $2,500.

The money was raised by the middle school football team as part of its annual pledge drive.

KENNEBUNK

FIFTH-GRADERS at Sea Road School recently planted Christmas Cactus cuttings with the help of the Kennebunk Garden Club.

Over the next few months, students will monitor the plants’ growth and sell them at the Holiday Fair held at the school in early December. The plants are being cared for in the school’s greenhouse, donated by the Kennebunk Education Foundation.

 

UNITED WAY of York County has been named the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport Chamber of Commerce’s 2010 Nonprofit of the Year.

THOMASTON

THE GEORGES RIVER Education Foundation has awarded six grants totaling nearly $10,000 to support the ongoing education efforts of Cushing, Thomaston and St. George students.

Those funds will benefit a Stories of Maine project to bring stories written by Mainers or about the state to students and will include author talks and field trips; an Enhancing Classroom Libraries with Engaging Books for Reluctant Readers program; a Virtual Algebra program to enhance classroom curriculum; a Marine Biology with Herring Gut Learning Center; and a student project to write a children’s book with Author and Illustrator Melissa Sweet.
