Eastern Cemetery tours

Walk Among the Shadows, tours through Eastern Cemetery with costumed actors portraying the interred when they were alive, will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and Oct. 28 through Oct. 30.

Presented by Spirits Alive in conjunction with Acorn Productions and Portland Playback, tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 years or younger, with proceeds benefiting the cemetery and restoration of the Congress Street fence. Better Breathing Buddies

A meeting of Better Breathing Buddies will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Bayview Heights, 158 North St.

The meeting will feature Deborah Fischer of Gentiva Home Health Care speaking on medication and exercise.

Driving class for seniors

An AARP Driver Safety Class for drivers age 50 and older will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. on Oct. 28.

Camera operators sought

TV3, the educational access station managed by the Portland Public Schools, needs volunteer camera operators to videotape classroom activities, student performances and other school events. The station also needs a volunteer play-by-play announcer for middle and high school sports games.

Southern Maine Pit Bulls

Southern Maine Pit Bulls is hosting Maine’s third annual Pit Bull Awareness Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Root Cellar. Peaks Island walk

The Peaks Island Walk and Harvest Fun will take place starting at 8:15 a.m. at the Peaks Island community building.

The group walk following a 5-kilometer route will depart at 10:15 a.m. There are map guided routes of various lengths for the event sponsored by Southern Maine Volkssport Association and Portland Recreation. Goodwill’s Ghoulwill Ball

Goodwill’s first annual “Ghoulwill Ball: Horror over Hollywood” will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday at the Eastland Park Hotel.

The ball is a fundraiser to support Goodwill’s Supported Employment Services, providing adults with disabilities the support they need to keep their job. There will be live music and dancing, a costume contest, a photo booth, a silent auction and other surprises.

Live benefit auction

Peoples United Methodist Church is hosting a live benefit auction with viewing starting at 6 p.m. Friday. The auction with auctioneer Harold Sutherland will begin at 7 p.m.

Items up for bid include collectibles, furniture, gift certificates, art, jewelry and household treasures. The church is located at 310 Broadway.

CAPE ELIZABETH

Paintings by Aria Tuki

The Local Buzz, a coffee house and wine bar, will host an exhibition of paintings by artist Aria Tuki through December. The opening reception will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Working in encaustics and inspired by the beauty and wildness of her natural surrounds, Tuki creates semi-abstract paintings of waves, splashes, light-filled tide pools and natural vignettes. The Local Buzz is located at 327 Ocean House Road in the Pond Cove Shopping Plaza.

CUMBERLAND

Taylor’s Grove performs

Taylor’s Grove will perform at the Prince Memorial Library at 6:30 p.m. tonight. Veteran country music performer Mac McHale and old-time gospel singer Carolyn Hutton bring a bit of the North and South together in their duo Taylor’s Grove. The library is located at 266 Main St.

WINDHAM

Auction to benefit school

With increasing deficits and cutbacks in the Windham Primary School budget, families, volunteers and school staff have coordinated a public auction to raise money.

The auction, consisting of a variety of items, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Windham Primary School gymnasium. The money raised will help cover the $45,000 shortfall in the school supplies budget.

STANDISH

Saint Joseph’s open house

Saint Joseph’s College of Maine is sponsoring a fall open house for high school seniors from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Prospective students are invited to tour the campus and attend information sessions on admission and financial aid. A complimentary lunch is included.

Quilt show Saturday

Nimble Thimbles, a chapter of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild, is hosting a quilt show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the First Parish Congregational Church.

More than 100 quilts, vendors and demonstrations will be present.

 

Open house at USM

The University of Southern Maine Office of Undergraduate Admissions is hosting a fall open house for prospective students and their families from noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday starting at the Costello Sports Complex on the Gorham campus.

Talent competition for kids

The Southern Maine Talent Competition is being held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Odd Fellows Building on the corner of School Street and College Avenue.

The competition is sponsored by the Music School and Dance Studio of Maine. Participants will compete in their age groups: 7-10; 10-14; and 15 and older. The winner in each age group will receive a gift certificate to the Dance Studio and Music School of Maine and be invited to perform at outreach events with the studio.

Historical Society’s 50th

The Yarmouth Historical Society is celebrating 50 years with a discussion led by Neil Rolde and his experiences in Maine. Rolde is the author of 14 books, most of them related to Maine history.

Night of the Jack O’Lanterns

The Bridgton Historical Society is hosting its Night of the Jack O’Lanterns at Narramissic, the historic Peabody-Fitch Farm, from 3:30 p.m. to dusk Saturday. As darkness falls, the Jack O’Lanterns will be set up in the field and lit for display. Visitors can also enjoy hot chocolate, treats and warmth by the campfire.

One-room school event

Oktoberfest fundraiser
