ORONO – Backup quarterback Chris Treister has been preparing for a potential start at Rhode Island this week, following an injury to Warren Smith in Maine’s loss to Villanova on Saturday.
Smith left with a hip pointer and painful bruise over a large swath of his leg.
Smith didn’t practice Tuesday and practiced lightly Wednesday, but said he may be ready to go by Saturday. A game-day decision will be made.
“It’s getting better every day,” said Smith. “The doctor told me to do what I can. I told Coach if I still feel uncomfortable he should go with Chris. He’s more than capable.”
Treister, a former Portland High quarterback, threw for a program-record 468 yards and five touchdowns last year against the Rams.
“Rhode Island is a much improved team from last year,” said Treister. “If Warren is ready to go, he’s ready to go. If not I’ll step in and do what I can do to lead the team to victory.”
Rhode Island (2-4) beat New Hampshire earlier this season and threatened to knock off Delaware, the second-ranked team in the country, last week.
Maine Coach Jack Cosgrove said if he goes to Treister, he wouldn’t make that decision public until the first snap.
“Warren has to go out there and practice,” said Cosgrove. “It’s something we don’t know. You have to be able to practice to play. It’s a requirement.”
Treister said this season has been a lesson in grace and patience.
His time at quarterback has been minimal since Smith was awarded the job at the close of preseason.
Treister has had no starts but has made three appearances at quarterback.
He led a fourth-quarter scoring drive against Villanova.
“In my position I have to take advantage of getting reps,” said Treister. “It was unfortunate the way the Villanova game turned out. But it was nice to get in and get some reps on offense.”
