Nov. 13 auction to
benefit Portland youth
PORTLAND — Hand-painted chairs and other furniture items will be sold to the highest bidders at an auction held Saturday, Nov. 13 to raise money for community service projects planned by Portland Public School students.
The auction will feature one-of-a-kind pieces made by local artists’ group Painting for a Purpose. Additional auction items were donated by local artists, including David Marshall and a group of artists from the Constellation Gallery, Alex Rheault, Nanette Tanner, Diane Manzi, Portland Superintendent James C. Morse Sr., and students in art classes at Portland Arts and Technology High School, Deering, and Portland High School.
The auction will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Rines Auditorium at the Portland Public Library’s main branch on Congress Street. Admission is $10 per person and $25 for a family.

Cheverus musicians
selected for festival
PORTLAND — Cheverus High School seniors, Emma Shapiro of North Waterboro and Gabe Terracciano of Portland, were selected for the 2010 All New England Band Festival.
The festival will be held on the campus of Plymouth State University on Monday, Nov. 22.
The Cheverus musicians were selected from a total of 346 applicants from 66 high schools in the New England states. Shapiro was selected as a bassoonist, and Terracciano was selected as a string bass player.
Portland Schools offer
ADHD parent support group
PORTLAND — The Portland Public Schools is starting a group for parents of students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, and related executive function challenges.
Dr. Christopher Kaufman, the district’s lead psychologist and author of “Executive Function in the Classroom,” will lead the group. The network’s parent coordinator, Tammy Ryan, will co-facilitate.
The next meeting date is Tuesday, Nov. 16. Meetings are free and open to the public and will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Lincoln Middle School, 522 Stevens Ave.
Subsequent meeting dates are Jan. 11, March 1, April 5 and May 3.
