CUMBERLAND — Deputy Fire Chief Nathan Schools was honored at Monday’s Town Council meeting for completing the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program.

Along with receiving a Maine flag that flew at the state Capitol from state Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess, R-Cumberland, Town Council Chairwoman Shirley Storey-King presented the officer with his official certification from the National Fire Academy.

Fire Chief Dan Small, who completed the program in 2005, said last week that the program is difficult, but also produces a great benefit. He said participants must attend two-week courses over four years at the National Fire Academy campus in Emmitsburg, Md., and have to write a paper that applies information from the class to their community.

As a result, Small said, the Fire Department’s service delivery capabilities to its customers are enhanced. He said fewer than 20 fire officials in Maine have earned EFO certification and about 3,000 public safety providers have done so nationally.
