Final Choices film screening

There will be a screening of “A Family Undertaking” at 7 p.m. Friday at the Allen Avenue UU Church, with a discussion to follow. The evening is sponsored by Final Choices, a committee dedicated to affordable end-of-life choices that are gentle to the earth and meaningful to family and friends.

 

Planetarium party Friday

The Southworth Planetarium is hosting its ninth annual Halloween party from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. The party will include showings of “Moon Witch,” a planetarium program, at 6:15, 6:45 and 7:15 p.m.

Admission is $5 per person or $1 for those who attend in costume. After the party, from 8 to 9 p.m., the planetarium will host “Ghost Hour,” a frightening hour in the star dome listening to live actors reading frightening ghost stories. The “Ghost Hour” is $7 per person and is not recommended for children younger than 14 or people with cardiovascular issues.

 

Telling Room workshop

The Telling Room is hosting open writing hours from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays through the remainder of the school year. Writers can bring their creative projects to work on.

A workshop “Theatrical Lightning” will also start from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday. The six-week workshop is open to all high school writers and storytellers. Gretchen Berg will instruct the group in how to write their own 10-minute plays. The Telling Room is at 225 Commercial St., Suite 201. Halloween silent film

The annual Halloween Silent Film screening will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Merrill Auditorium. The feature is “Speedy,” with live accompaniment on the Kotzschmar Organ by Tom Trenney.

Shannon Moss will emcee the event, with a special interview with Tom Trenney just before the start of the concert. Tickets, which are $17 for general seating, are available through PortTix from noon to 6 p.m. through Friday and the evening of the event.

 

Silver Stars performance

Silver Stars will perform excerpts from “Spoon River Anthology” at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday amid the tombstones in Munjoy Hill’s Eastern Cemetery. The performance is free, but donations will be accepted.

Silver Stars is Munjoy Hill’s Senior Acting Troupe that meets monthly for the reading of a good play.

 

Medicare info session

Beach Glass Transitions, 277 Congress St., is teaming up with Caroline Irwin, an independent insurance agent who specializes in Medicare benefits, for an informational session from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday.

Walk-in flu shot clinics

Flu prevention clinics have started in Portland, with the Public Health Division of the city’s Health and Human Service Department offering a series of eight influenza walk-in clinics.

The seasonal flu vaccine will be available for $10 or at no cost for individuals with Medicare Part B card. Pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine will also be available for $45 or free for people with MaineCare. The clinics are open to adults 18 years or older.

A clinic is being held from 8:20 to 11 a.m. today at the Peaks Island Community Center. Additional clinics are scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 8 at St. Pius X Parish Hall on Ocean Avenue; from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10 in the State of Maine Room at City Hall; from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 15 at Allen Avenue UU Church; from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 6 at St. Pius X Parish Hall; and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 8 in the State of Maine Room at City Hall.

 

Haunted House Saturday

There will be a haunted house at The Woodfords Club, 179 Woodford St., on Saturday. From 6 to 7 p.m., the house will be geared toward the faint of heart, but from 7 to 9 p.m., the scary version will be in full gear.

Admission is $5, $10 for a family of three or $15 for a family of four. Hot chocolate, cider and cookies will be available.

E-waste recycling event

The Rotary Club of Scarborough is holding an E-waste Recycling Event and Fundraiser for the Food Cupboard of South Portland from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Scarborough Public Works on Washington Avenue. The event is open to all and costs $2 per item, which will benefit the Food Cupboard.

Items accepted include household electronics, batteries, cell phones, games and consoles or copier and printer cartridges. Items not accepted include appliances and white goods, Freon-bearing items, fluorescent bulbs and mercury-bearing items.

People bringing items to recycle are encouraged to donate nonperishable food, health and beauty aids, dish detergent and laundry detergent for the Food Cupboard.

NORTH YARMOUTH

Make a penny rug

Local artist and retired art teacher Anne Tarbox will demonstrate how to make a penny rug from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The penny rug is a form of appliqueed table rug that was popular in the mid-18th century.

During the session, attendees will make a small round mat to learn the technique of layering and stitching the pieces together. Materials will be provided, but each participant is asked to bring sharp fabric scissors. The workshop costs $25. To register, call 829-5708.
