PORTLAND — After reviewing more than 20 trees in Portland, South Portland, Falmouth and Scarborough, Portland’s Downtown District has chosen this year’s holiday tree for Monument Square.

The 45-foot blue spruce was donated by a private landowner on Washington Avenue in Portland.

“The tree was planted 39 years ago,” Sayre English of the Portland Downtown District said Tuesday.

On Nov. 18 a volunteer crew from Shaw Bros. Construction and Keeley Crane will cut down the tree and transport it from Washington Avenue, across Tukey’s Bridge and down Congress Street to Monument Square.

The lighting ceremony will take place on Nov. 26, the day after Thanksgiving, at 5:30 p.m. This year the tree will be lit by a Make-a-Wish Foundation child.

After the ceremony, Rick Charette and the Bubblegum Band will perform a holiday-themed children’s concert.
