LaGRANGE — A friend of a woman who was mauled by a bulldog while taking a walk in a small Maine town says the woman has been placed in a drug-induced coma for her pain.

Vaughn Adams tells the Bangor Daily News that 41-year-old Karen Stewart was put into the coma after being taken to a Boston hospital following Friday night’s attack in LaGrange, north of Bangor.

Adams said he found Stewart “ripped apart” with more than 20 dog bites after she dragged herself back to his house. He said Stewart was undergoing surgery this afternoon.

Police have charged the owner with keeping a dangerous dog. The dog has been put into quarantine at the Bangor Humane Society, where officials say the animal is a bulldog mix.
