South Portland received a $35,300 grant last month from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to restore water quality and aquatic habitat at Trout and Kimball brooks, which are below the state standards.
The department has designated both streams as impaired because of water quality issues related to storm runoff and adjacent residential land uses.
A number of groups are interested in enhancing the area, including the South Portland Land Trust, which aims to enhance the recreational amenities around Trout Brook.
