Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland will have new bleachers by next spring. Demolition of the old bleachers on the home team’s side of the field began Monday.

The new bleachers will have wide aisles and handicapped-accessible areas on the upper levels.

“They’ll look like the bleachers at Deering’s Memorial Field, but with blue backing instead of purple,” said Ethan Owens, athletic facilities manager for the city.

Owens said the new bleachers will seat 3,800 on the home side and 2,500 on the visitor side. The city is using its capital improvement fund to pay the $950,000 cost of the project.

“We thought we were going to be able to do just the home side at first, but when the bids came in, we were able to do both,” Owens said.

All-Star Bleachers of Lakeland, Fla., was low bidder. Material Handling Sales of Yarmouth is doing the installation.

Owens said May 15 is the contracted deadline, but he hopes the project can be completed in early April. By 2012, Owens said, Fitzpatrick will also have new lights and a new synthetic turf field, replacing the one installed in 2001.
