AUGUSTA – Gov.-elect Paul LePage announced his first two official cabinet nominees on Wednesday, tapping top campaign aide and former Waterville Police Chief John Morris as Maine Department of Public Safety commissioner and re-nominating Maj. Gen. John Libby who currently serves as commissioner of the Maine Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management.

Libby was first nominated as commissioner by Gov. John Baldacci, a Democrat, in January 2004.

LePage, a Republican, said he was prioritizing safety and security with his first cabinet announcements.

“As Maine’s next governor, I have no higher obligation than the safety and security of Maine and its people,” he said. “Whether it is natural disaster, crime or terrorist threat, my administration will be prepared to protect and preserve the welfare of Mainers.”

The nominees are subject to legislative approval.
