AUGUSTA — Geologists say Maine’s snowpack is just as expected so far – it’s where the snow is that’s a bit of a surprise.

Robert Johnston of the Maine Geological Survey says winter storms have piled snow along coastal areas, not in the western mountains.

He says the lack of snow in the far northeast part of the state was also a surprise, measuring only an inch to 6 inches. He says Aroostook County usually has more snow, but warmer temperatures may have melted some of it.

The next survey will be done Feb. 1. The surveys help forecast spring flooding.
