PHIPPSBURG — A home on Parker Head Road was destroyed this morning by a fire that officials say might have been caused by a faulty wood stove.

Assistant Fire Chief Arnold Rice said the century-old wood-framed house, which had a metal roof, was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters from several towns arrived around 10 a.m.

The homeowner, Kenneth A. Hodgkins, escaped without being harmed, but firefighters could do little else but make sure the fire did not spread to nearby homes, Rice said.

Phippsburg is a rural community and there was no water source nearby. Rice said fire trucks from Bath, West Bath, Woolwich and Topsham had to shuttle water into the fire scene.
