A search committee has picked four finalists for president of the University of Maine, UMaine System Chancellor Richard Pattenaude announced Tuesday.

The one chosen to be the 19th president of the system’s flagship university in Orono will succeed Robert Kennedy, who plans to step down in June.

The finalists are:

Donald J. Farish, Ph.D., J.D., of Woodbury, N.J., who has been president of Rowan University in New Jersey since 1998.

Paul W. Ferguson, Ph.D., of Glen Carbon, Ill., who has worked at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville since 2006 and is now provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs and a professor of pharmacology, toxicology and biology.

Daniel J. Julius, Ed.D., of Fairbanks, Alaska, who has been vice president for academic affairs in the University of Alaska System of Higher Education and a professor at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks since 2007.

James H. Page, Ph.D., of Old Town, who has worked for the James W. Sewall Co. since 1997 and is now principal and chief executive officer.

“Our committee is very pleased with the clear leadership skills and extensive experience of the candidates,” said Eleanor Baker of Cape Elizabeth, a UMaine alumna and the system trustee who heads the 14-member search committee.

Each finalist will visit UMaine between Jan. 24 and Feb. 9 and meet with representatives of the university community, Baker said. The search committee will review the community’s feedback and present its impressions to Pattenaude. The chancellor will recommend one candidate to be considered by the system’s board of trustees.
