SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — An official with a Vermont fuel oil dealer says his company saved 43,400 gallons of fuel and delivery trucks drove 320,000 fewer miles when heavy trucks were able to travel on the state’s interstate highways.
But the rule that allowed heavier trucks to drive on the interstates expired last month.
Champlain Oil Company Vice President Bryan Cairns spoke today at a news conference with U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy and other officials who talked about the need to increase the truck weight limit on highways in Vermont and Maine.
Leahy says he and his Maine colleague Sen. Susan Collins are going to introduce legislation in Congress to raise the weight limit.
A one-year pilot program in the two states that allowed the heavy trucks on the interstates expired last month.
