PORTLAND — FairPoint Communications says it has met its commitment of making broadband available to more than 83 percent of its customers in Maine.

The telecommunications company announced today that high-speed Internet is now available to 83.4 percent of its customers.

FairPoint was required to make broadband accessible to at least 83 percent of customers by the end of 2010 as a condition of its 2008 acquisition of Verizon’s northern New England telephone operations.

FairPoint officials say 68.9 percent of customers had broadband access when it bought Verizon’s operations. The company has since made it available to another 44,000 homes and businesses.

North Carolina-based FairPoint emerged from bankruptcy this week nearly 15 months after filing for Chapter 11 reorganization.
