Auburn kicked off its annual Winter Festival on Saturday with the first of 10 days of events dedicated to the season’s bright side — outdoor fun on ice and snow.

A pond hockey tournament and a snow playground drew families to Walton Field, and a night of discounted skiing with the Lewiston Maineiacs brought teenagers to Lost Valley.

A bonfire near the play area, with free hot cocoa and coffee from Tim Horton’s, warmed festival-goers on Saturday and will be repeated from 2 to 4 p.m. next Saturday.

The outdoor rink at Walton is open for free public skating.

Other events will include an ice fishing derby at Taylor Pond, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Lake Auburn and a variety of activities at Lost Valley and Auburn Library throughout the festival.
