AUGUSTA — Lawmakers today criticized the Maine Turnpike Authority for high salaries, lavish spending on hotels and restaurants, donations to politically connected groups and lobbying activities.

The expenses were detailed in a report by the Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability.

Turnpike Authority officials today said they are making changes to end some of those spending practices.

The Legislature’s Government Oversight Committee today held a public hearing on the report. The hearing began this morning and is continuing this afternoon.
