WINDHAM — A house fire that started in the basement at 301 Roosevelt Trail was brought under control within 10 minutes tonight, according to the town’s fire chief.

The residents of the home called in the fire about 7:40 p.m., and when firefighters arrived they found a fire in the basement, around the furnace area, said Windham Fire Chief Charles Hammond.

“There’s fire damage to the building, but it’s not extensive,” Hammond said. “The building is repairable and people can move back into it. We had to break out some windows to get the smoke out of the building so we could go in and do our job.”

Hammond said firefighters will return to the building Sunday to take a closer look at the furnace and see if they can determine how the fire started.

There were no injuries, but the residents of the building had to seek shelter elsewhere for the night.

Gorham, Gray and Westbrook firefighters assisted at the scene.
