BRUNSWICK — Eleanor M. Ashby, 73, formerly of Freeport, died Feb. 8.

One of 14 children of Ernest and Thelma (Young) Doughty, she was born in Bath on Nov. 20 1937, and attended Falmouth schools.

On July 1, 1960, she married Vernon A. Ashby Sr., of Portland and made their home in Freeport, where they lived for more than 30 years and raised four children.

She worked for various employers over the years, including R. J. Peacock Cannery of Portland, Worumbo Mill, Eastland Shoe Company, and Dennison Seafood Company until she retired in 2003.

Her hobbies included genealogy research and crossword puzzles.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1995.

Surviving are her children, Gloria Bailey of Bath, Joyce Mathews of West Bath, Sandra Martin of Columbia, Miss., and Vernon A. Ashby Jr., of West Bath; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, whom she dearly loved spending time with; sisters Christine Libby of Arundel and Alice Rickett of Kittery; many nieces and nephews, including Linda, David, Nelson, Stevie, Ricky, Cathy, Levi, Eric, Allan and Tommy.

At her request, there will be no public funeral services. A private family graveside committal service at Elmwood Cemetery in Pownal will be held this spring.
