AUGUSTA — Old Orchard Beach had four players in double figures as the Seagulls pulled away from Monmouth Academy early and rolled to a 62-42 victory in a Class C boys’ basketball quarterfinal Monday at the Augusta Civic Center.

The third-ranked Seagulls (14-4) will face No. 2 Boothbay in a regional semifinal Thursday night. Monmouth, the No. 6 seed, finished 12-7.

Old Orchard outscored the Mustangs 15-8 in the second quarter, using their size to score down low.

Nate Dow, a 6-foot-7 center, had six of his 10 points in the quarter, and Ryheem Lang forced two turnovers and sank a smooth turnaround jumper in the paint to spur the surge.

The Seagulls lead 11-10 after the first quarter. Just 35 seconds into the second quarter, Lang followed a Dow jump shot with a block on Jeremy Ashlock’s layup attempt.

Tim Whitmore sank a turnaround layup for Monmouth and Robby Neal hit a jumper underneath to keep the Mustangs within a point, 15-14. But OOB’s Ryan Gallant sank a 3-pointer, and a Monmouth basket by Scott Peacock was answered by Lang’s turnaround jumper in the lane to make it 20-16.

Andrew Fleury followed with a 3-pointer and Dow scored underneath as the Seagulls opened a 26-18 halftime lead.

Old Orchard then outscored Monmouth 17-9 in the third quarter.

Fleury finished with 16 points, Gallant and Lang each scored 14, and Dow added 10.

Monmouth was led by Neal with 14 points, but Whitmore was held to eight.

“Is that all he got? Then we did well,” Seagulls Coach John Regan said of the senior point guard. “We scouted Whitmore’s outside shooting. I feel pretty good to hold that kid to eight points. We used a full-court press, and we keyed on Whitmore.”

The 20-point victory pleased Regan, particularly because the Seagulls struggled from the line, making just 9 of 18 free throws.

OOB forward Jason Dutton said the Seagulls need to shore up their free-throw shooting, but noted that the Seagulls played well overall.

“We just worked on getting it in to our big guys,” said Dutton.
