BRUNSWICK — Cape Elizabeth brought home a second-place trophy and a batch of impressive individual medals from the Class A boys’ swimming and diving championships Tuesday night at Bowdoin College.

For the team title, though, it was that familiar group in red and white accepting the champions’ trophy. Bangor High won its fifth straight championship, again demonstrating outstanding depth.

With only one first-place finish, the Rams still totaled 328 points to the Capers’ 260, followed by Windham (234).

Windham was paced by Nicholas Sundquist (second in the 50 and 100 freestyles).

Massabesic (197) was fourth and Cheverus (163) fifth.

For Cape Elizabeth, Evan Long (200 freestyle and 50 freestyle) and Marcus Cloutier (200 individual medley and 100 freestyle) collected a pair of gold medals. They also swam in the victorious 200 freestyle relay and finished second in the 400 freestyle relay.

Cloutier was named the meet’s top performer.

“It was a very good outing,” Cape Elizabeth Coach Ben Raymond said. “Marcus and Evan couldn’t have swum much better. They had unbelievable meets. We did everything we could do, but Bangor has numbers.”

Bangor placed 14 swimmers and two divers in the finals and 15 swimmers in the consolations. The Rams’ only individual win was Sam Barnett’s 1:02.15 in the 100 breast stroke.

Tyler Wright of Massabesic (53.79) and McHale Whitehouse of Kennebunk were 1-2 in the 100 butterfly. They reversed the order in the 100 backstroke, Whitehouse (55.70) edging Wright (55.98). Arthur Conover of Messalonskee (4:47.86) won the 500 freestyle.

In diving, Tyler Gouldon of Thornton Academy won with 355.05 points, ahead of Kevin Flathers (307.75) of Cape Elizabeth and Dylan Farber (275.35) of Deering.

Both Cape and Windham had 11 finalists, but only four and two in the consolations, respectively.

The Eagles enjoyed a brief lead by winning the first race, the 200 medley relay, in 1:41.88 — featuring Alexander Gilvey, Nathan Paluso, Sundquist and Lance Webster. They also won the 400 freestyle relay (3:19.42).

In the 200 freestyle, Webster and Gilvey finished 3-4 behind Long (1:47.38) and Conover. But Bangor, with four swimmers in the race, didn’t fall far behind.

Bangor took the lead after the third race, the 200 IM. Cloutier (1:59.91), Paluso and Massabesic’s Sam Lariviere finished 1-2-3, but Bangor recorded fourth, seventh and ninth places.

Cape Elizabeth was in second place after Flathers took second and Peter Doane fourth in diving.

After the 100 butterfly (Wright ahead of Whitehouse by a second), Cloutier stepped onto the blocks for the 100 freestyle. He stayed just ahead after each turn, winning in 48.52 to Sundquist’s 48.85.

The Capers took the 200 freestyle relay in 1:30.93, featuring Long, Cloutier, Wesley Richards and Paul Wennberg.
