Tower of ice blows down during high wind gusts

The 120-foot tower of ice constructed by the Bethel Chamber of Commerce blew down in winds that reached nearly 80 mph over the weekend.
Chamber Executive Director Robin Zinchuk said the tower toppled within the perimeter fence just after dusk Saturday in high winds. Ice climbing demonstrations that had been planned for today and Friday have been canceled.
Designers had been struggling with weather changes, including a 50-degree thaw last month, and with efforts to get the tower built up to the planned 140-foot height.
The tower was built using a series of 1-inch pipes. As water seeped out of the top of the pipes it froze on the way down, coating the structure with ice.

Surrounding towns seek cut of revenue from casino
Officials from towns surrounding Oxford, which is due to host Maine’s first full-blown casino, plan to ask their legislators to help them get a cut of casino revenue.
Oxford County will receive a percentage of the casino revenue, but towns bordering Oxford won’t receive direct funding from the casino.
Paris Town Manager Phil Tarr told the Sun Journal newspaper the intent is to create a regional fund for local towns to use for police, fire and roads to alleviate strain resulting from the casino’s presence.
He said the towns of Paris, Norway, Poland and Mechanic Falls will be represented at a meeting Friday in Paris.
Black Bear Entertainment plans to build a casino with both table games and slot machines along Route 26 in Oxford.

Investigators continue probe of weekend shooting death
State investigators continue to probe the shooting death of a teenager at a Dolloff Road apartment Saturday night.
Tyler Seaney, 19, had been visiting a friend when the gun went off, police said over the weekend.
Detectives from the Maine State Police Criminal Investigation Division have not come to any conclusions, including whether it was accidental, spokesman Stephen McCausland said Monday. No one has been charged, he said.
The upstairs apartment is rented by a young man roughly the same age as Seaney, according to McCausland. The tenant has not yet been identified by authorities.
According to the obituary Seaney’s family sent to the Bangor Daily News, the youth lived in both Belfast and Glenburn and had graduated from Belfast High School.
He had joined the Army and was waiting to leave for boot camp.

Maine man faces charges after weekend altercation
A Maine man is facing charges he assaulted a woman in Bangor by hitting her in the face with a snowball, pulling her hair and ripping out her earring.
Police said two officers were patrolling on Front Street early Saturday when they heard people arguing.
When the officers investigated, they made contact with the victim, who described the man who had allegedly assaulted her.
Police said 25-year-old Charles Kroll was arrested after he refused to sign a criminal summons for assault. He was then taken to the Penobscot County jail. Kroll is facing two misdemeanor charges.
