Yes, it seems like we just reviewed an America’s Test Kitchen cookbook, but it’s nasty outside, we’re still cold to our bones, and there’s a slow cooker cookbook on the desk begging us to make some last-days-of-winter comfort food.

The test kitchen ran 30 slow cookers a day over several months to develop more than 200 recipes for “Slow Cooker Revolution” (America’s Test Kitchen, $26.95). The book includes lots of classic comfort foods, such as Chicken Enchilada Casserole, Shepherd’s Pie, Swedish Meatballs, Italian Stuffed Bell Peppers, Beef Stroganoff, Lamb Vindaloo and Chicken Gumbo.

The test cooks made some discoveries along the way, including some clever shortcuts that resulted in barbecued ribs cooked without a grill, and a “Bachelor Beef Stew” that requires no prep work at all, not even a knife.

Are men really that lazy in the kitchen? Somehow we doubt it.
