PORTLAND — Portland Shellfish Co. is scheduled to restart production next week at its South Portland crab processing plant, which was shut down two months ago because of unsanitary conditions.

About 50 workers are due to return to their jobs at the plant on Dartmouth Street in South Portland which was cited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for unsanitary conditions such as a leaking roof. The FDA has given the OK to reopen, said company president Jeff Holden.

The plant on Waldron Way in Portland, which employs another 50 people, has not yet been cleared to restart lobster processing, which usually starts in May, said Holden. The plant was shut down for listeria contamination, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.

Holden said his company has made extensive renovations and improvements to meet FDA requirements.

He said some workers were temporarily laid off as a result of the shutdowns while others remained on the job during the shrimp processing season.
