FREEPORT — Using stimulus funds from an $81,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant, 40 residents have the chance to receive a free home energy audit.

Town Planner Donna Larson said the home audits complete the last piece of a town-wide conservation effort. The money has been used to install insulation and reduce lighting in town buildings, complete a street-light analysis and install timers on parking-lot lights, she said.

Freeport Energy Challenge pamphlets have been distributed at Town Hall, the Community Center and local churches, and Larson said she has received 10 applications.

“This is a first-come, first-served opportunity,” she said.

Interested residents must complete an energy audit application and provide information about the size of their home, and the type and cost of energy used.

The audits will include infrared scanning for air infiltration and insulation conditions and visual inspections of the attic, basement, living spaces and exterior walls. The audit will also provide a heating system efficiency test.

Three of the 40 homes will be awarded simple home energy conservation tools such as weather stripping, caulking, outlet insulation and CFL light bulbs. These upgrades will be provided by trained students as part of a community service project.

The town will select a local energy audit provider by Thursday, March 17, and will begin audits when all the applications have been submitted.
