Catherine McAuley High School junior Lulu Hawkes of Gorham was recently named the 2011 Poetry Out Loud State Champion. Her  recitation of three poems,  “Gitjanjali 35″ by Rabindranath Tagore, “Black Boys Play the Classics” by Toi Derricotte, and “A Song for Soweto” by June Jordan won her the state title and a trip to the national competition held next month in Washington, D.C.
