Waynflete students attend model UN

PORTLAND — Six Waynflete students recently attended the Model United Nations Conference held at Harvard University.

The group of students represented the country of Estonia, with Mohamed Mohamud and Sam Hansen serving on the Model UN Human Rights Council; Nellie Semmes and Addison St. Onge serving on the Model UN Conference on Trade and Development; and Erika Joyce and Pravina Truong serving on the UN Development Programme.

Mohamud, Hansen, Semmes and St. Onge were honored as Outstanding Delegates.

More than 3,000 high school students from over 35 countries attended the four-day Harvard Model UN Conference,  where students debated issues that confront world leaders and drafted resolutions.

Cheverus students earn service award

PORTLAND — Two Cheverus High School students, senior Cecile Day and sophomore Samantha SaVaun, were presented with the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Cecile Day of Scarborough received the award for time spent volunteering at Maine Medical Center, primarily in the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. This is the second year she has received the award.  

Samantha SaVaun of Portland received the award for her volunteer service at Maine Medical Center, the Habitat for Humanity Restore, as a bookstore volunteer and as a junior counselor at the YMCA’s Otter Pond day camp.

Local students compete in state geography bee

PORTLAND — Four students from the Portland Public Schools have qualified to compete in the 2011 Maine Geographic Bee on April 1 at the University of Maine, Farmington campus.

The bee is open to students in grades four through eight who receive a top score in the qualifying test. The students attending the state bee are William Bourque, a fourth grade student at Ocean Avenue Elementary School; Ellianna Boothe, a sixth grade student at Lyman Moore Middle School; Benjamin Jones, a seventh grade student at Lincoln Middle School; and Matthew Knowles, a seventh grade student at King Middle School.

The state winner will receive $100, the “Complete National Geographic on DVD” and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent Maine in the national finals in May.

Seth Guiod and Devon Kelley,  students on the Portland Arts and Technology High School robotics team,  recently won gold medals at the Skills USA state competition in Bangor.  They each earned a $1,000 scholarship to Johnson and Wales University and an invitation to compete at the National Skills Championship in Kansas City this June.
