STANDISH — Chad Rafferty pitched a one-hitter as St. Joseph’s defeated Thomas 1-0 in the opener of a baseball doubleheader Tuesday.
The Monks (16-9) completed a sweep when Alex Markakis singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and Andrew Devereaux pitched a perfect seventh to preserve a 2-1 victory.
Rafferty struck out nine and walked four in the opener. Alex Lorenc singled home Dan Achorn in the sixth to give the Monks the lead. Jake Chamblee pitched a four-hitter for the Terriers (7-16).
Mason Roberge held Thomas to a run on seven hits in six innings in Game 2. He struck out four and walked one.
UMASS-BOSTON 2, USM 1: The Beacons (8-12, 3-2 Little East) broke a 1-1 tie on a squeeze by Taylor Kapulka in the fifth inning and beat the Huskies (11-10, 2-3) at Waltham, Mass.
USM’s Matt Powers had an RBI single in the third to tie the game. Ben Ives pitched a four-hitter and struck out 13.
SOFTBALL
MAINE 10, HUSSON 2: Kirstin Allen hit a three-run home run to end the game in the bottom of the sixth because of the mercy rule as the Black Bears (16-22) downed the Eagles (9-11) at Orono.
Jennifer Eberhardt and Kali Burnham each knocked in two runs for the Black Bears, and Meghan McLain and Allen each scored twice.
BOWDOIN SWEEPS THOMAS: The Polar Bears (13-13) won the opener 6-2 and the second game 5-3 against the Terriers (11-9) at Brunswick.
In the opener, Bowdoin rallied for three runs in the first inning on a two-run triple by Hannah Wurgaft and an error.
In the second game, the Polar Bears scored four times in the sixth inning on a two-run triple by Kara Nilan, an RBI single by Caroline Dewar and an error. Tricia Thibodeau scattered five hits, walked three and struck out four for the win. Melissa DellaTorre pitched the final inning for the save.
COLBY SWEEPS MAINE MARITIME: Lauren Becker pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead the Mules (5-10) to a 1-0 win in the second game after they beat the Mariners (10-5) 3-2 in the opener at Waterville.
Barbara Santos broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the fifth inning of the opener. Colby took a 2-0 lead in the third on RBI singles by Santos and Alyssa Lepore. Maine Maritime answered in the fourth with home runs from Leah Jackson and McKenzie Burke.
In Game 2, Katie Graichen singled and scored on a fielder’s choice in the fifth.
UNE, ANNA MARIA SPLIT: Amber Zablowsky pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts as UNE (22-6, 15-1 TCCC) won the second game 8-0 after losing the opener 4-1 to the Amcats (12-14, 5-9) at Paxton, Mass.
Maegan Johnson hit a two-run double in the second inning, Alison Stanley had an RBI single in the fifth and Stephanie Podolski hit a two-run single in the fifth.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
USM 14, ST. JOSEPH’S 8: Shelby Turcotte and Lauren Santo scored four goals apiece to lead the Huskies (3-8) past the Monks (3-5) at Gorham.
Mary Vaughn added two goals and two assists for USM, which led 10-3 at halftime.
Cassandra Diplock scored four times for St. Joseph’s, and Amelia Santos had two goals and two assists.
CURRY 18 UNE 15: Curry (12-1, 7-1 TCCC) opened the second half with seven straight goals to wipe out a two-goal deficit and beat the Nor’easters (4-9, 1-5) at Milton, Mass.
Danielle Cate and Hannah Tavella each had three goals for UNE.
MEN’S LACROSSE
ST. JOSEPH’S 18, DANIEL WEBSTER 2: Paul Dolewa had four goals and an assist as the Monks (7-6, 2-2 GNAC) beat the Eagles (3-3, 1-2) at Nashua, N.H.
Benson Pasquarello added three goals and four assists, Jonathan Horgan had three goals and three assists, and Spencer Hunt had three goals.
UNE 13, CURRY 8: The Nor’easters (7-7, 3-4 TCCC) scored the final four goals and defeated the Colonels (4-9, 1-7) at Milton, Mass.
Steven Smith scored with five seconds left in the third quarter, Michael Woods made it 10-8 1:09 into the fourth and Chris Garber and Dylan Thomas scored seven seconds apart with about 10 minutes left.
Tyler Thomas had three goals, and Dylan Thomas, Michael Woods and Michael Pennacchio had two apiece for UNE.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
UCLA: Guard Malcolm Lee is leaving school to enter the NBA draft and plans to hire an agent, ensuring he won’t be eligible to return for his senior season.
BUTLER: Junior guard Shelvin Mack said he is declaring to enter the draft but has not hired an agent, making him eligible to return to school next season.
