AUGUSTA — The Maine Public Utilities Commission is reminding utility customers that winter disconnection protection rules come to an end this week.

Electric and gas utilities are not allowed to disconnect utility service from customers who have overdue bills between Nov. 15 and April 19 without permission from the commission’s consumer assistance division.

That means the so-called “winter rules” for disconnections end on Tuesday. That’s when the “summer rules” for disconnections become effective, allowing utility companies to disconnect customers without permission from the commission.

The commission says customers who are unable to pay overdue bills should contact their utilities and make payment arrangements.
