With the recent strong pitching performances in the Telegram League, what can we expect the rest of the season?

More of the same, hopefully.

Two of the league’s best pitchers will duel Thursday when Marshwood visits Westbrook at Olmsted Field. Game time is 4 p.m. Marshwood right-hander Luke Fernandes, a junior whose fastball touches 90 mph, will be matched against lefty Scott Heath, last year’s Telegram League MVP. Heath has a fastball in the mid 80s and a curveball that can give hitters fits.

Fernandes also has an excellent curve, leading Portland High Coach Tony DiBiase to compare him to Ryan Reid, who helped leading Deering to a Class A state championship in 2004. Reid is now playing Triple-A ball in the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization.

Heath is headed to UMaine on a scholarship.

The game will be a good test for both teams. Westbrook is 6-0 as it enters the toughest part of its schedule. Marshwood (5-1), meanwhile, wants to show it can play with the top teams in the league.

CHEVERUS BOUNCED back from a loss to Biddeford with an impressive 7-1 win over South Portland — an outcome that underlines the league’s balance. The Stags are ranked second behind Biddeford in Western Class A. Westbrook is the only remaining unbeaten team, but Cheverus, Marshwood, Scarborough and Deering are 5-1.
