AUGUSTA — Charter schools, which were an issue during last year’s gubernatorial campaign, are moving to the forefront again in the State House.

The Education and Cultural Affairs Committee will hold a hearing today on a bill to allow charter schools in Maine, which supporters say is one of 10 states that don’t allow them.

Public charter schools are voluntary public schools that can neither teach religious practices nor discriminate against students or teachers. They must adhere to state and federal academic requirements.

Gov. Paul LePage campaigned in favor of charter schools. Proponents of the bill say they have public support on their side.
