AUGUSTA — A city man was flown to a Lewiston hospital Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself in the stomach.

The 34-year-old Augusta man told police he was cleaning his handgun inside his Eastern Avenue home around 8:30 p.m. when the gun accidentally discharged, said Augusta Police Sgt. Christopher Massey.

The victim was flown by a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment of a single gunshot wound to his stomach, Massey said.

Police are investigating the incident.

“We don’t expect anybody else was involved,” Massey said.
