Update 6:50 a.m.

BEALS ISLAND — The power is back on for most residents of Maine’s Beals Island, but several commercial users, including the school, remain in the dark.

Bangor Hydro says power to the island was lost Monday evening after the cable connecting the island to the mainland failed. Beals Island is about four-tenths of a mile from the mainland.

At its peak, about 400 customers were without power.

For most customers power was restored about 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Bangor Hydro crews will be working Tuesday to repair any lingering issues.

BANGOR — Electric company officials say crews are working to restore power to the residents of Beals Island after a cable connecting the mainland to the island malfunctioned.

Bangor Hydro Electric Co. spokesman Bob Potts said residents are expected to be without power until sometime Tuesday morning. They lost power Monday evening. About 391 meters were affected, he said in a statement.

Beals Island, located in Washington County, is near Jonesport, a fishing village.
